A stubborn rash on your face, arms, or behind the knees is often eczema, and it does not have to control your life. At Cure Allergy Clinic, Dr. M. Waseem Imam, a board-certified pediatric and adult allergist, diagnoses what is actually driving your flare-ups and builds a plan to bring your skin back under control.

We treat children and adults across Arlington, Irving, and Mansfield, along with surrounding North Texas communities, including Grand Prairie, Fort Worth, Bedford, Euless, Hurst, and Coppell. Call (817) 678-5575 to schedule, or book online.

Find Quick Relief: What Is Eczema?

Eczema is a chronic skin condition that makes the skin red, inflamed, dry, and intensely itchy. Its medical name is atopic dermatitis, and it happens when an overactive immune response combines with a weakened skin barrier that struggles to hold in moisture.

Eczema is very common, especially early in life. By one estimate, up to 20% of children have it, and most outgrow it over time. For adults who do not, it can become a serious, ongoing condition that affects sleep, comfort, and confidence. The good news: with the right plan, flare-ups can be prevented and managed for long stretches of relief.

Eczema is not contagious. You cannot catch it from or pass it to another person.

What Causes Eczema?

Eczema is caused by a combination of an overactive immune system, genetics, and a skin barrier that loses moisture too easily. Doctors do not know exactly why some people develop it and others do not, but it tends to run in families, and your risk is higher if you or close relatives have allergies or asthma.

When the skin barrier is weak, irritants and allergens penetrate more easily. This causes the immune system to overreact, inflaming the skin and triggering the itch. Scratching then damages the barrier further, which creates the well-known itch-scratch cycle that keeps flare-ups going.

What causes eczema treatment in texas

Common eczema triggers include:

  • Foods that provoke an allergic response
  • Airborne allergens: pollen, mold, dust mites, pet dander
  • Irritants: detergents, soaps, and cosmetics
  • Fabrics such as wool
  • Dry air, sweat, heat, and stress

Part of effective treatment is identifying your specific triggers so you can avoid them. Dr. Imam works with you to map exactly what sets your skin off.

What Are the Signs & Symptoms of Eczema?

Eczema appears as dry, itchy, inflamed skin, and the symptoms tend to come and go in flares. The itch is usually the most disruptive symptom and often appears before the rash itself.

Common eczema symptoms include:

  • Persistent itching
  • Dry skin that may crack or bleed
  • A red rash or red patches
  • Changes in skin color
  • Small blisters
  • Thickened or scaly skin from repeated scratching

Where eczema shows up depends on age:

  • Infants and young children: cheeks, knees, and the outside of the elbows
  • Adolescents and adults: hands, arms, feet, and the backs of the knees

Because flares come and go, tracking when and where your symptoms appear helps your provider connect them to specific triggers.

How We Diagnose Eczema

Eczema is diagnosed through a medical history, a skin exam, and, when needed, allergy testing to find what is triggering the flares. Dr. M. Waseem Imam starts by reviewing your symptoms and asking about exposure to possible allergens and irritants, then examines the affected skin.

If an allergy may be involved, your provider can perform a skin prick test: a tiny puncture is made in the skin, a diluted allergen is applied, and the area is watched for about 15 minutes. Bumps or redness suggest a reaction to that substance. Identifying these allergic triggers is what lets us treat the cause of your eczema, not only the surface symptoms.

How to prepare

Stop antihistamines and allergy medications for 4 to 7 days before testing, since they suppress the reactions the test measures.

Eczema Treatment Options & Daily Care

Eczema treatment combines daily skin care, medication to calm flare-ups, and treatment of any underlying allergy that triggers them. The goal is fewer, milder flares and longer periods of clear, comfortable skin.

Your plan may include:

  • Daily moisturizing & skin care

Repairs and protects the skin barrier so it holds moisture and keeps irritants out. The foundation of every eczema plan.

  • Topical medications

Antihistamine creams or steroid creams to reduce redness, swelling, and itching during flares.

  • Allergy drops or shots (immunotherapy)

When an allergy is driving the eczema, immunotherapy reduces or eliminates that underlying allergic response.

  • Trigger avoidance

A personalized list of the foods, materials, and irritants to steer clear of, based on your testing.

A simple daily skin-care routine for eczema:

  1. 1

Bathe in lukewarm water and avoid harsh soaps.

  2. 2

Moisturize within minutes of bathing, while skin is still damp, to lock in moisture.

  3. 3

Apply moisturizer at least twice a day, and more often during a flare.

  4. 4

Avoid known triggers, including rough fabrics and fragranced products.

Your treatment process, step by step:

  1. 1

Consultation with Dr. Imam to review your history and examine your skin.

  2. 2

Allergy testing, when an allergic trigger is suspected.

  3. 3

A personalized treatment and skin-care plan built around your triggers.

  4. 4

Ongoing management to keep flares controlled and the barrier healthy.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is eczema contagious?

No. Eczema is not contagious. You cannot catch it from or spread it to anyone.

Can diet affect eczema?

Yes, for some people. Certain food allergies can trigger flare-ups. Allergy testing helps identify whether a specific food is contributing to your eczema.

How often should I moisturize if I have eczema?

At least twice a day, and more often during a flare. Moisturizing within a few minutes of bathing, while the skin is still damp, locks in the most moisture.

Can stress worsen eczema?

Yes. Stress is a common trigger that can set off or intensify a flare, which is why managing stress is part of long-term eczema care.

What causes eczema flare-ups?

Flares are triggered by things like certain foods, pollen, dust mites, pet dander, detergents, wool, cosmetics, dry air, sweat, heat, and stress. Your triggers are specific to you.

Will my child outgrow eczema?

Many children outgrow eczema as they get older. For those who do not, ongoing treatment keeps symptoms well-controlled into adulthood.

Is eczema related to allergies and asthma?

Yes. Eczema, allergies, and asthma often run together in families and share an overactive immune response, which is why an allergist is well-suited to treat it.

What other conditions do you treat at Cure Allergy Clinic?

In addition to comprehensive eczema care, Dr. Imam provides expert diagnosis and treatment for environmental allergies, asthma, sinusitis, chronic cough, food allergies, and related allergic conditions.
